Welcome to the NHS!

On December 8 of 2016 the Lenape branch of the National Honors Society welcomed 89 new members into its ranks. The NHS is known as an elite organization that brings together the best students, recognizing them for all of their hard work and achievements. Once seated, we were welcomed by the president, Srishti Dhar, who is also the editor-in-chief of our very own Smoke Signal! I could see how happy the students were and how proud the families in the audience felt. It was truly a special feeling. We had spent our freshman and sophomore years preparing for that moment, and we were finally there, ready to accept our certificates and badges.

The four pillars of the NHS are Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service, four things that all NHS members must display in order to be accepted. Scholarship is shown by how you tackle your studies, shooting for the highest grades possible. Leadership is shown by your willingness to represent a group and lead them through their activities and duties. Character is shown by your  demeanor. Are you a kind person? Finally, Service is shown by helping your school and community, going above and beyond to aid those in need, and proving you are dedicated to other people.

It is not easy to maintain these four critical characteristics, but 89 students proved it could be done. The entire ceremony was absolutely wonderful. We were graced by musical performances from the Concert Choir and soloist Kelsey DiPenta, as well as heartwarming speeches from the officers, staff (Mrs. Stansbury and Mr. Bausch), and Principal Anthony Cattani.

The ceremony was concluded with everyone reciting the NHS pledge:

“I (name), pledge myself to uphold the high purposes of the National Honors Society to which I have been selected; I will be true to the principles for which it stands; I will be loyal to my school and maintain and encourage high standards of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character”

And maintain and encourage them we do!
