On November 10, 2023, Marvel Studios released their newest film, The Marvels, which serves as a sequel to Captain Marvel, as well as a continuation of the plotlines from WandaVision, Ms. Marvel, and Secret Invasion. Throughout this movie of humor, love, and friendship, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) must work together to take on a Kree revolutionary who is intent on bringing life back to her planet, Hala, after Carol’s revenge on the Supreme Intelligence incidentally leaves Hala in an uninhabitable state. However, with the three’s powers having been entangled, tense relationships among Carol and Monica, and Kamala being new to the superhero world, they’ve all got their work cut out for them.
After watching The Marvels last weekend, I wanted to take a moment to lay out my thoughts regarding this underrated yet enjoyable film, so let’s dive right in.
**This review contains spoilers from The Marvels.
Personally, I found The Marvels to be extremely entertaining. There were many times when I was laughing out loud, along with the whole audience, because the comedy was truly on point. I felt that the addition of Kamala’s family enhanced the movie’s humor while simultaneously expanding the viewer’s knowledge of Kamala and her family from Ms. Marvel. I honestly wasn’t very interested in Ms. Marvel‘s storyline at first, but after seeing this film, I’ve definitely grown to appreciate the characters more and the touching relationships they have with each other.
I also thought it was a good choice to delve into Carol and Monica’s reunion because it’s been a while since they’ve seen each other, and Monica’s life has changed so much in that time span. It was heartwarming to see them grow as a family by the end of the movie, even if they’ve been separated again. (I’m not sure how I feel about tying the X-Men into the MCU, but I won’t dwell on that too much because I haven’t seen the movies myself).
And can we talk about Aladna? The planet’s language is literally through song? I don’t know if I ever recall a main Marvel superhero singing as if they were in a movie musical, but now I can say I have. I will not lie– I did cringe during Carol and Prince Yan’s dance, but at least we got a cute Captain Marvel-inspired dress out of it.
All in all, The Marvels is a lovable, quirky film that I would definitely recommend watching. It has a great mix of heartfelt and humorous moments, not to mention, A LOT of adorable cats (well, Flerkens). And, after seeing the Kate Bishop cameo at the end of the movie (who was introduced in Hawkeye), I’m super excited to see what’ll become of the MCU and what’s in store for the Young Avengers.
Will Marvel be able to build back up to the esteemed level it was before? I guess we’ll just have to keep watching to find out. But if their next movies are just as entertaining as The Marvels was, I have pretty high hopes for the future.
