The NFL Honors Awards were recently announced. Here are the winners of some of the biggest awards.
MVP – Raven’s Quarterback Lamar Jackson
Lamar Jackson led his team to the best record of 13-4 in the NFL and had an exceptional season. He played outstandingly, accumulating 3,678 passing yards and 821 rushing yards. Lamar is the only player to have produced over 3,000 passing yards and over 800 rushing yards multiple times. He won the MVP award both times he achieved this feat. Furthermore, he is the fifth player to win multiple MVP awards in his first six seasons in the league. Lamar also topped the league in yards per carry with an average of 5.5. He also ranked top 10 in total QBR (Quarterback rating) with 64.7, yards per pass attempt (8.0), and touchdown-to-interception ratio (3.4).
Offensive Player Of The Year – 49ers’ Running Back Christain McCaffrey
Christain McCaffrey is arguably the best running back in the league. He proved his worth this season by consistently scoring touchdowns and delivering excellent performances on the field. He led the league in multiple categories including scrimmage yards per game (126.4), scrimmage touchdowns (21), rushing yards (1,459), first downs (114), and 10-plus yard runs (44) while playing 16 games. McCaffrey also put his name in the record books as he brought his total career games with a rushing and receiving score in the same game to 15, tying with Marshall Faulk for the most in league history. Additionally, he became only the third player in NFL history to tally over 2,000 scrimmage yards in a season for two different franchises.
Defensive Player Of The Year – Browns’ Defensive End Myles Garrett
Myles Garrett has won his first DPOY award, which was very well deserved. Although he ranked only 7th in sacks with a total of 14, he led his team’s defense, which was one of the best defenses in the current season. The Browns topped the league in defensive efficiency, allowing only 267 yards per game and recording a three-and-out rate of 32.9%. He got double-teamed quite often this season with a rate of 28.8% (3rd highest). Despite that, Garrett finished second in pass rush win rate with 30.5%.
Offensive Rookie Of The Year – Texans’ Quarterback CJ Stroud
CJ Stroud carried his team to the playoffs – a team that was 3-13-1 last season – and had himself a record-breaking season. The #2 pick set the record for most pass attempts without an interception to start a career (191). He continued the rest of the season with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 23:5, which was the best in the league. He completed the regular season with 4,108 passing yards which was the third most for a rookie. In week 9 against the Buccaneers, he even set the record for the most passing yards by a rookie in one game with 470. Also, not to mention, he already has a playoff win under his belt. That makes him the first top 2 pick to win a playoff game in his rookie year since 1967. That win also made him the youngest to win a playoff game, passing Michael Vick.
Defensive Rookie Of The Year – Texans’ Defensive End Will Anderson Jr.
The #3 pick had a pretty good season, tallying up 7 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and 22 QB hits despite suffering an ankle injury that made him miss two games. He ranked third in pass rush win rate (25.8%). He also impacted the run game as he was sixth in run-stop win rate (36%) among defensive ends with at least 400 snaps.
Coach Of The Year – Browns’ HC Kevin Stefanski
The Browns have made the postseason just three times since 1999. Two of those with Stefanski as head coach, and in both he was named Coach of the Year. This season, the Browns managed a record of 11-6 despite various season-ending injuries to key players, such as star running back Nick Chubb. Furthermore, Cleveland became the first team since 1987 to field five different quarterbacks throughout the season. Despite these challenges, the Browns made a franchise record of winning scores in the final two minutes of regulation on five separate occasions. It is truly impressive how Coach Stefanski was able to guide his team through such adversity and come out with a winning record.
Comeback Player Of The Year – Browns’ Quarterback Joe Flacco
Joe Flacco went from sitting on the couch to suddenly starting for the Cleveland Browns. He was unsigned until halfway through the season when the Browns were looking for a quarterback after Watson’s season-ending injury. In his first start with the Browns, he threw for over 250 yards with multiple touchdowns. This makes him the first quarterback to achieve this in his first 5 starts with a new team. Over those five starts, Flacco also led the NFL with 1,616 passing yards. With Flacco at the QB position, Cleveland won four games in a row, securing its first playoff appearance since 2020.
