This past Tuesday, Lenape’s National Honor Society students visited the Mount Laurel elementary schools to read to the children in celebration of Read Across America Week.
NHS students selected a variety of their own childhood books to read to the kids and asked for volunteers to answer questions about the books. The children, eager to participate, were awarded decorated bookmarks, which were made by NHS members in the weeks leading up to the event.
The day was an incredible full-circle moment for Lenape’s students as well. It wasn’t too long ago when we were in the same shoes as the elementary schoolers, gazing in amazement at the high school students who came to read for our class. Now, as Springville, Larchmont, Hillside, Parkway, and Countryside alumni, we had the opportunity to be those “old” high schoolers who got to share our love of reading with the kids.
Hopefully, this tradition will continue for years to come, as it creates special memories for elementary and high school students alike. Happy Read Across America!
