If you have not noticed or have been living under a rock, TikTok was banned for a staggering eighteen hours last month before suddenly being unbanned the day before the inauguration. After all those months of painstaking work and TikTok petitioning the US Supreme Court over it to get banned and then unbanned for not even a full twenty-four hours, why was it unbanned so quickly??? It seems obvious that it’s Trump. Despite him not even being on the app he played THE majority speaking role in its preservation since for better or worse it did help him win the election as numerous of his voters were and are still on the app, the TikTok company itself from April 2024 to when legislation was pulled up to start enacting a ban to its unban the day before his inauguration was riding on trumps shoulders to keep TikTok online but From seeing on other social media like Facebook and Reddit they were ecstatic. I cannot lie, so was I desperately hoping that with the ban this country’s IQ would go up just a bit more, but of course the right path (or right course as some might call it) doesn’t seem to be all that popular in this country. I’m not ranting or blabbering, but this has no positives, taxpayers money and legislative time were wasted and there is no excuse for that. The Trump administration also permitted a 72-day extension for TikTok before it is restricted again.
What’s more important is that, like it or not, TikTok is a national security risk. Additionally, Trump suggested that TikTok could continue as long as the United States purchases up to 50% of it to make it equal with TikToks owner ByteDance effectively. Coupled with some calls from US billionaires inclining but not limited to: Elon Musk and Kevin O’ Leary aka the guy from Shark Tank that they would happily buy TikTok if they had the chance. Nevertheless, I don’t envision these proposals being translated toward fulfilment, lots of talks and essentially zero action.
